How a VMware to Hyper-V Migration Set a Foundation for Growth
Romanoff Renovations, which installs flooring for Home Depot across 13 US states, moved its private cloud from VMware to Summit Hosting's managed Hyper-V on new Dell hardware, gaining predictable monthly billing at a lower cost.

About Romanoff Renovations
Romanoff Renovations is a national flooring company that handles all commercial and residential flooring installations for Home Depot across 13 U.S. states. The business operates field offices across the country and already used Microsoft tools throughout those offices, along with a public cloud presence in Azure, Veeam for backups and Microsoft SQL Server databases. Its operations depend on a private cloud that must keep pace with continued national expansion.
The challenge
When Romanoff Renovations first reached out to Summit, it was not looking for a VMware to Hyper-V migration. The company simply wanted a more responsive partner to manage the private cloud supporting its operations across the United States, with 24/7/365 support that is always available rather than reactive.
At the time, Romanoff ran VMware as its hypervisor and was watching the price tick steadily upward after the Broadcom acquisition, both at a baseline and through bundled packages and minimum buys. VMware did the job, but it did a lot more besides, and Romanoff was paying for it. VMware also required pre-paid annual billing, which most companies are not set up to handle.
The infrastructure itself had grown inconsistently over time: different servers with different core counts running at different speeds, so a VM scheduled on one host behaved differently from the same VM on another. The environment needed to support continued national expansion, not just keep pace with it.
This go-live truly demonstrated the expertise and professionalism the Summit team brings to complex migrations like this.
The solution
Summit Hosting started, as it does with every engagement, by asking about Romanoff's business goals. Because Romanoff already used Microsoft tools across its field offices and ran a public cloud in Azure, Summit proposed Microsoft Hyper-V as an alternative to VMware. Hyper-V comes with its own licences, saving the cost of separate Windows licences, and integrates with Azure. The cost savings alone were enough to win approval from senior management.
Summit's discovery process found that Romanoff's hardware was not right-sized for where the business was going, so the plan included a full hardware refresh from Dell 14th-generation to 16th-generation servers with standardized, high-core-count AMD EPYC processors on every node. Summit owns the Dell relationship, so it handled configuration, pricing and sizing, and built an active-active environment on new hardware while still reducing Romanoff's overall costs.
Because Romanoff already used Veeam, Summit used Veeam Continuous Data Protection to take an initial backup followed by delta backups, and relied on Veeam's application-aware restores so Microsoft SQL servers came back cleanly. The migration followed Summit's four-phase process: infrastructure assessment and discovery; private cloud design and planning using a 'Lift and Shift Plus' approach; migration testing and validation, including a pilot and a rollback plan; and the VMware to Hyper-V migration itself, run in three waves during off hours by Summit's on-site 24/7/365 team, followed by a final data sync and cutover.
The time from contract signature to migration-ready was roughly six weeks, with only a few weeks of active client involvement for assessment and testing.
The results
- Reduced infrastructure cost, with predictable monthly billing replacing VMware's pre-paid annual model
- Hardware refreshed from Dell 14th- to 16th-generation servers, three generations newer
- Consistent VM performance under load on standardized high-core-count AMD EPYC nodes
- Continuous data protection through Veeam, with application-aware restores
- Roughly six weeks from contract signature to migration-ready, with only a few weeks of client effort
- Room to grow, backed by Summit's 24/7/365 on-site support
