About BKF Engineers

BKF Engineers is an architectural and design engineering firm headquartered in Redwood City, California, with offices throughout the state. For more than 100 years the firm has provided engineering, surveying, and land planning services to architects, developers, colleges, cities, hotels, health care facilities, large corporations, and many other clients. BKF works with Chris Sandell, a top-producing agent at Bridgepointe Technologies, the Silicon Valley IT strategy firm and master agent that helps companies procure, implement, and maintain IT services.

The challenge

BKF Engineers needed internet connectivity for its offices across California as well as a private connection between those offices. It also had backup internet contracts coming up for renewal. The firm's incumbent provider was Comcast, and BKF had had enough of poor customer service.

BKF's CIO put a simple question to Chris Sandell, the Bridgepointe agent he had worked with for years: could the firm get the same service from someone who would support it better? Sandell had had Mosaic NetworX on his radar for around two and a half years, waiting for the right opportunity, and in 2020 this was it.

The open question was price. Both Sandell and Mosaic were confident they could deliver better customer service than the incumbent, but Mosaic is an aggregator, which meant BKF would still be using Comcast circuits underneath. The proposal had to be competitive on cost as well as responsiveness, and it had to hold up against bids from multiple other suppliers.

With Mosaic, things are still great after the client bought and that's a big deal. Their project management has been perfect. They've been responsive, they follow up, they're accurate, they provide the right information, they're on top of things, they set expectations, you know what next steps are, they are just very dialed in.

The solution

Mosaic NetworX, founded in 2007, is an IT infrastructure provider specializing in network aggregation and managed services. Its team of network engineers and telecom veterans places particular emphasis on customer experience and project management. Sandell presented BKF with multiple solutions, including one from Mosaic.

Mosaic was not the lowest-priced option, but BKF spoke with the Mosaic team and liked what it heard: the information was accurate and timely, and the proposal was simple and well priced. Mosaic's smaller size was also an advantage, because it was what the client wanted. Through a combination of pricing, responsiveness, and presentation, Mosaic NetworX was awarded the first contracts for BKF's internet and private connectivity.

As an aggregator with hundreds of carriers worldwide, Mosaic delivers a single-vendor solution: one quote, one bill, one currency, one language, one project manager, and one customer service team. Neither BKF nor its agent has to deal directly with underlying carriers such as Comcast or Lumen; both deal only with Mosaic. Mosaic's project management handled the implementation, following up, setting expectations, and keeping BKF informed of next steps at each stage.

The results

  • Initial contracts awarded for seven of BKF's California locations based on pricing, responsiveness, and presentation
  • Further multi-year contracts signed for the remaining offices on the strength of Mosaic's performance
  • Engagement has the potential to be worth a quarter of a million dollars over four years
  • One quote, one bill, and one project manager replace direct dealings with Comcast or Lumen
  • Mosaic's responsiveness cuts the agent's support time in half or more, with post-sale project management described as perfect
