About Kelson Group

Kelson Group is a property management company headquartered in Kamloops, British Columbia, with apartment properties across BC and Alberta. Its stated purpose is to provide apartments that help residents live better, which the company believes includes supplying its onsite teams with current information in a timely manner. A large number of remote staff need access to its data management platform, and equipment and sites across a diverse geographic area must be monitored. Jason Wassing is the company's IT Manager.

The challenge

Kelson Group's operating model depends on onsite teams having current information in a timely manner. That means a large number of remote staff need reliable, secure access to the company's data management platform from wherever they work.

As the company grew, it kept adding devices and sites across a diverse geographic area spanning British Columbia and Alberta. Each new property brought more equipment to monitor and more staff to connect. The logistics of maintaining the network required to support all of this became untenable, and managing devices and services at different locations meant interrupting staff on site.

Connectivity billing had become a burden of its own. With the increasing complexity of operations, the accounting team was handling more than a hundred bills a month for connectivity across the various properties. Kelson Group needed one cohesive network that could deliver secure access, reliable voice and straightforward administration, and that could grow with the company as it added sites.

Technology has always been a priority for us. We try to operate as efficiently as possible and iTel has helped us do just that

The solution

Working with iTel Networks, Kelson Group built out its network on L2 connections, with fibre at its Kamloops head office. Routing all traffic through head office over Layer 2 means the company does not lose speed or stability, and with MPLS running on that network the IT team can monitor traffic and easily optimize for performance and efficiency.

iTel's ability to interconnect fibre with other broadband connections, including Ethernet over ADSL and coax, allowed Kelson Group to build one cohesive network that delivers ethernet to every site while maintaining high operational standards and security. Remote staff at any location can securely reach the data they need for maintenance and tenancy work.

On top of the data network, iTel layered voice with a hosted PBX system and VoIP phones. Delivering voice over a reliable and stable network ensures strong communication between the company's many diverse sites, with consistent call quality.

Because iTel has a nationwide footprint, adding new sites as the company expands is a straightforward process, as is connecting the many mobile devices in the field and a growing workforce. iTel also consolidated the connectivity billing, so the accounting team now receives a single bill instead of more than a hundred each month.

The results

  • Connectivity bills reduced from more than 100 a month to one
  • IT Manager's workload became drastically more manageable, with devices managed across sites without interrupting staff
  • Staff at all locations can easily and securely access data for maintenance and tenancy
  • Real-time monitoring of equipment at sites replaces reliance on inspections or emergencies
  • Reliable voice quality over a stable network via hosted PBX and VoIP phones
  • New sites, mobile devices and a growing workforce are straightforward to add
