About Zoom Video Communications, Inc.

Zoom Video Communications, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZM) was founded in 2011 by Eric Yuan, a former Cisco VP of Engineering, and is headquartered in San Jose, California. Zoom provides a unified communications (UC) platform for video meetings, voice, webinars and chat across desktops, phones, mobile devices and conference room systems, and helps enterprises integrate business applications and build customized workflows with developer tools. Its customers span technology, finance, education, government and healthcare in markets around the world.

The challenge

Zoom was growing rapidly and needed to establish a presence in new global markets such as Asia-Pacific and Europe efficiently and cost-effectively. Building data center and network operations in each region from scratch would have slowed the company's aggressive worldwide expansion.

At the same time, customer demand for greater scalability and security was increasing, particularly among financial services and government organizations. These customers wanted direct, private interconnection to Zoom's video UC services so their traffic could bypass the public internet, and they expected regulation-compliant voice and data privacy protections.

Zoom therefore looked for a partner able to deliver a high-performance, secure and reliable interconnection and data center platform that could support its growth objectives, provide sites for disaster-recovery backup across regions, and give customers a consistent way to connect to its services wherever they were.

The solution

Strategic partners since 2015, Zoom has used the extensive Equinix colocation footprint and interconnection portfolio available through Platform Equinix to expand its worldwide presence. Zoom now operates in Equinix International Business Exchange (IBX) data centers in nine markets: Silicon Valley, New York, Toronto, Tokyo, Hong Kong, Sydney, Melbourne, Amsterdam and Frankfurt.

The company placed at least two data centers in each of the Americas, EMEA and Asia-Pacific regions, creating sites for reliable disaster-recovery backup across different regions. The consistency of the Equinix platform lets Zoom stand up data center and interconnection operations easily anywhere in the world.

Zoom also uses Equinix Internet Exchange, the world's largest internet exchange footprint, to aggregate network peering more scalably across its global carriers, establishing multiple traffic aggregation points worldwide through local IP peering. Equinix Cloud Exchange Fabric (ECX Fabric) software-defined interconnection lets Zoom set up and scale access to networks, clouds, partners and customers in days, and lets enterprise customers connect privately to Zoom's video, voice, webinar and chat services. According to Zoom, more and more customers choose to access its services through ECX Fabric.
