The client is a leading global provider of data, technology and analytics solutions to customers in business and politics. Positioned at the bleeding edge of technology, the company brings integrated capabilities to its customers to help them understand and use data to its full potential, taking it from informative to actionable. Its IT Director oversees multiple departments, each needing peers into private cloud environments, alongside platforms on AWS and Oracle.

The challenge

The company's IT Director needed a flexible way to connect to critical cloud environments while keeping a single peer back to a customer-owned router. Each of the Director's departments needed the ability to add peers to its private cloud environments easily, and teams needed to peer back to the customer's router on demand when connections were required at short notice. The team also needed to connect between its AWS and Oracle platforms with ease.

Traditional approaches did not fit. Connecting to multiple public and private cloud environments would normally require fixed terms that leave no room for the flexibility the company demanded. Multicloud connectivity between many environments usually calls for a highly complex network architecture, and without a next-generation cloud connectivity solution it is almost impossible to achieve while maintaining a single peer back to a customer's router. Adding peers between a customer's router can take weeks to months through traditional connectivity means.

The company also wanted redundancy built into its cloud connectivity for added network resilience. Mirroring connections in this way typically carries high costs and long lead times.

The solution

The IT Director used Megaport Cloud Router (MCR) to build a high-performance multicloud strategy that supports many connections to public and private cloud platforms while maintaining a single peer back to the customer router. Megaport is a Network as a Service (NaaS) provider whose software defined network interconnects enterprises and service providers across hundreds of data centre locations.

The company deployed two Ports at a Megaport enabled data centre and completed a single mode fibre cross connect through its data centre operator. It then established two MCRs in two separate locations within the same metro for redundancy, and finally set up BGP peering between these environments. The second MCR peers with the customer router and mirrors the connections to the cloud, so redundancy is built in rather than bolted on.

The result is a flexible cloud connectivity architecture that connects the company's cloud environments, starting with AWS, and maintains the single BGP peer back to the customer router. Peers to cloud environments can be added on demand and right-sized, scaling up and down as needs change. MCRs can be established on demand, additional connections to cloud service providers can be created in minutes, and further clouds can be added to the footprint in a simple, on-demand way. The company plans to add Azure and Google in future and is evaluating additional data centre locations for more connections.
