About A U.S. environmental services company

The customer is a leader in the environmental services industry, operating in nearly every state across the U.S. Through its subsidiaries it provides millions of customers with a complete set of products and services, including recycling, solid waste removal, special waste removal, hazardous waste disposal, container rental, and field services. The company employs 40,000 people, including 15,000 to 20,000 drivers and field team members, and has made commitments to advance circularity, reduce emissions, and decarbonize its operations.

The challenge

The company's first problem was POTS (Plain Old Telephone Service). A history of acquisitions had left it with hundreds of different telephony providers across its many U.S. locations. The result was inefficiency and resource drain, legacy technology and system incompatibility, a lack of transparency, poor quality, and unnecessary expense.

Once the POTS issue was resolved, the company set out to upgrade its entire network. It needed to replace aging Cisco equipment, diversify access, increase bandwidth, and modernize outdated and aging network infrastructure.

The company also saw an opportunity to better connect the 15,000 to 20,000 drivers and field team members who move between locations every day and need reliable wireless devices. Beyond the field, it wanted end-to-end mobility management for all 40,000 employees, without taking on the administrative burden of configuring, deploying, and supporting tens of thousands of devices itself.

The solution

MetTel first engaged with the company on its POTS challenge. Its POTS Transformation solution consolidated thousands of legacy phone lines across the country and upgraded them to a modern digital voice network, giving the company one consistent, reliable, feature-rich voice network at a much lower cost, complete transparency, and a single invoice from one provider.

With that project complete, MetTel moved on to the legacy network, deploying managed SD-WAN across the entire organization. The upgrade delivered enhanced connectivity, full transparency into the network, redundancy and resilience, heightened security, and more bandwidth at lower cost.

To connect drivers and field crews, MetTel managed the logistics of configuring and deploying close to 20,000 tablets across the U.S. Each tablet was equipped with MetTel Single SIM technology, which intelligently roams to find the strongest signal in any location, regardless of carrier, drawing on a network of more than 650 carriers across 165 countries so that devices stay connected as workers move from site to site.

Most recently, MetTel took on the company's complete end-to-end enterprise mobility program through its MDaaS (Mobile Device as a Service) solution. MetTel's 100,000-square-foot warehouse handles staging, kitting, configuration, and shipping of smartphones and tablets, as well as returns and repairs, for 40,000 employees, along with connectivity, access, and cross-carrier pooling. MetTel provides ongoing management and dedicated 24/7 support for all of these solutions.

The results

  • Thousands of legacy POTS lines consolidated into one modern digital voice network at a much lower cost
  • Full managed SD-WAN upgrade across the organization, adding transparency, resiliency, security, and bandwidth
  • Approximately 20,000 tablets configured and deployed by MetTel, giving hundreds of hours back to the internal team
  • MetTel Single SIM keeps drivers and field teams connected 100% of the time across 650+ carriers
  • MDaaS handles staging, kitting, shipping, returns, and repairs for 40,000 employees' smartphones and tablets
  • One provider and one invoice, with ongoing management and dedicated 24/7 support
