About A national fitness club chain

Headquartered in California, the client is a pioneer of the health club industry and one of its leading operators. It serves more than four million members across hundreds of clubs in the United States, in settings that range from urban to rural, and opens new clubs every few weeks. The chain has been a MetTel customer since 2014 and manages nearly 2,000 telecom accounts across its locations.

A national fitness club chain case study

The challenge

To stay competitive, the fitness chain needed to offer high-speed Wi-Fi of 50 to 100 Mbps to members at every club. With clubs in nearly every type of setting, from urban to rural, its network had grown into a patchwork of cable, DSL, Ethernet, fiber, and copper access technologies. Internet service was inconsistent, sometimes nonexistent, and was delivered by multiple carriers at very high cost.

The company needed to upgrade its existing clubs and, at the same time, establish a scalable and efficient process that could keep pace with new clubs opening every few weeks. Installation and project completion had to be turned around urgently.

Any new solution also had to lower telecom costs, create a consistent and modern experience for members, adapt to every location, and require no maintenance from club employees. The chain wanted measurable results and mitigated risk, with everything managed and monitored by a single team rather than multiple vendors.

The solution

MetTel made sure every existing club had enough bandwidth to support guest Wi-Fi, installing a combination of cable, fiber, and Line of Sight Broadband, the latter serving remote locations where cable and DSL were not available. Throughout the migration MetTel provided complete project management so that turn-ups went smoothly and did not disrupt club business.

Beyond installing reliable internet and Wi-Fi access points, MetTel now monitors and manages all of the chain's telecom services 24/7/365 from its Network Operating Center (NOC), staffed by trained and certified engineers. The chain has a dedicated single point of contact for every telecom service, regardless of service type, geography, or underlying carrier.

MetTel's online platform, Bruin, streamlined billing, reporting, help desk, invoicing, and inventory management, and standardized the process for placing and tracking MACDs (moves, adds, changes, and disconnects) across all carriers and locations. The platform gives the chain a centralized view of its telecom services, with deep technical resources and customer service available around the clock. As part of the consolidation, MetTel integrated 22 carriers into one managed account with one point of contact and one invoice, covering POTS, cable, DSL, Cloud PBX, and more.

The results

  • Savings of more than $194,000 per month from consolidating POTS, cable, DSL, Cloud PBX, and more
  • 60% savings from consolidating 3,000+ digital lines and 200+ broadband lines
  • 22 carriers integrated into one managed account with a single point of contact and invoice
  • Line availability increased to 99.88%, with service requests resolved in under one hour 88.99% of the time
  • High-performing Wi-Fi at every club, creating a consistent member experience with no maintenance burden on staff
