About A leading ground transportation supplier to the USPS

The customer is one of the largest suppliers of ground transportation services to the United States Postal Service (USPS), serving 33 states and hundreds of USPS facilities. Its operations extend beyond USPS work to dedicated lanes and operations for large corporate customers and freight transportation for various shippers. The company prides itself on cutting-edge technology, social responsibility and quality service, with a fleet of low-emission vehicles, nationwide reach and dedicated partnerships.

The challenge

Over the years the organization had accumulated a variety of carriers, invoices and vendor contracts: nine separate mobile and IoT vendors in all, complicating technology integration and vendor relationship management across multiple regionally operated Postal haulers. The board was pressing for lower overall mobility spend and better control over spending, yet there was no centralized management or visibility into the mobility and IoT program.

The organization also wanted better tracking of its drivers and trailers across the country. Fleet drivers needed tablets with reliable, consistent connectivity for collecting federal compliance information, but the fleet's wireless connectivity was inconsistent and unreliable throughout the country.

Trailer tracking had to be accurate, dependable, integrated and USPS compliant. The IoT program needed to adhere to stringent USPS compliance and regulatory standards, adding a layer of security and complexity to any solution.

The solution

MetTel's solution combined Mobile Device as a Service (MDaaS), Single SIM connectivity and an IoT as a Service framework that met the customer's compliance and regulatory needs.

Through MDaaS, MetTel provided preconfigured tablets for the entire fleet, handling ordering, inventory management, staging, kitting, configuration and shipping of field-ready devices. MDaaS bundles many mobility services under one umbrella, including vendor consolidation, migration onto a more unified and cheaper platform, and cross-carrier pooling to manage multiple carrier services and invoices. Configuration of the in-vehicle, multi-carrier platform was tailored to the mobile workforce, covering Knox enrollment, MDM setup, mounting system consultation, proper wiring for each vehicle installation, application integration and ongoing support.

MetTel's Single SIM powered the trailer tracking solution. The multi-carrier SIM intelligently roams to find the strongest signal across AT&T, T-Mobile, Verizon and US Cellular, giving the nationwide fleet reliable, consistent connectivity regardless of location or carrier; the service is also available in 165+ countries. MetTel's IoT as a Service framework let the customer choose from multiple hardware, software and cellular options to deploy the best fit for its business requirements, with remote trailer tracking backed by software analytics and reporting.

Today the organization works exclusively with MetTel for its key mobility and IoT needs, with 10,000 lines migrated or added to one multi-carrier platform that MetTel designed, deployed and now fully manages.

The results

  • Nine mobile and IoT vendors consolidated into one platform, one vendor and one bill
  • 10,000 lines migrated or added to a single multi-carrier platform
  • 100% cellular network connectivity for drivers and trailer tracking
  • Mobility and IoT program costs cut by 28% annually
  • 2,000+ trailers now compliant with USPS regulations
  • Centralized control and heightened security across the entire fleet of tablets
